Dental implants are one of the most sought-after and effective solutions for replacing missing teeth. They’re tiny, titanium screws that are surgically implanted into your jawbone, where they effectively function as artificial tooth roots.
Because your body doesn’t recognize titanium as a foreign substance, a dental implant actually fuses with your jawbone as you heal. This process is called osseointegration.
Once fused, a dental implant is a highly sturdy foundation on top of which Dr. Gelman can affix a crown, bridge, or dentures to restore your smile.
To understand the benefit of dental implants, it helps to first understand the harm of missing teeth. Your mouth was designed to function with all of its teeth working together in harmony.
When you’re missing teeth, it throws off the functioning of your entire mouth. Missing teeth can lead to:
Missing teeth can also lead to changes in the shape of your face. Your jaw and facial muscles will eventually atrophy and sag wherever you’re missing a tooth.
Dental implants stave off many of these problems by filling in the gaps in your smile and keeping your jawbone stimulated. Unlike other restoration procedures, like bridges, dental implants don’t require you to shave down any of the enamel in your mouth.
The first step in getting implants is to ensure that you have enough healthy jawbone to support the implant. If Dr. Gelman determines that you don’t have enough bone tissue, he performs a bone graft.
Once your jaw can support the implant, Dr. Gelman numbs your mouth, makes a small incision in your gum, drills a hole in your jawbone, and inserts the implant.
He stitches up your gum, places a healing cap on the incision site, and sends you home so that you can heal and the implant can fuse with your jawbone. This process takes anywhere from 3-6 months.
Once the implant fuses to your jawbone, you come back to NJ Dental 1 for another visit where Dr. Gelman places an abutment, which is a small post that connects to the implant and sticks out above your gums.
With the abutment in place, Dr. Gelman places your final restoration, whether it’s a crown, bridge, or implant-supported dentures. You’ll leave his office feeling as if you’ve just regrown your natural tooth.
